Step 2. Bend the hinge pin as shown in the picture. I struggled a bit with the first one until I got the 3-D geometry figured out. The sequence is so simple it makes one blush as to the mental hesitancy.
- First, as in the picture showing the hole in step 1, above, mark the first bend.
- Mount it in your vice and make the bend using some type of pounding instrument. It does not matter at this point which direction you bend. Any direction will do.
- Re-insert the pin (you don't need both hinge halves on), make sure it is bent to your liking.
- Once bent correctly, make the critical second mark, shown below. This is the directional bend.
- Once you have that bent 90 degrees, you'll have to cut the pin to length. Check the fit, then smooth the tip just made by the cut.
- You're not done. Check the opposite end of the pin to see if it's sticking out too far. If so, mark it, pull it out, cut it, smooth the tip, put it in and now you're done.
I don't have a safety wire tool, so I've marked in my notebook to come back and safety wire this. I figure I'll have to take the hinge pin out again while assembling anyway. It'll be part of pre-flight to check this pin, so I'm not worried about not doing the safety wire at this point.
