The HS is finished!
Long live the HS!

I actually began work on the HS on 7/24/05, when I looked ahead and decided to work on the inboard hinge bracket assembly on page 8-3.  Of course I didn’t read the instructions that clearly say to clamp the piece to a flat surface, and thus it didn’t come out sitting flat.  It does help to not only measure twice, but to read twice as well.  The real work on the HS began with the deburring of the rear spar on 8/5/05.

Total time for the HS =

Step 1.   Deburr, deburr, deburr.   Actually, even though I hate deburring, this isn't so bad.  It's thick and straight and is easy to do.

Basically, everything here is in 2 hour blocks simply because by the time I get to the hanger it’s about 8pm. By 10pm I’m tired and need to get back to the house to calm down and get some sleep. Sometimes I think it’d be better to have the project at the garage, but I enjoy the occasional hanger flying that I find when I’m there.

I tend to skip ahead and cut and finish deburring parts as much as possible. I’d rather concentrate on a task, and a tool, such as the band saw for as much as I can get done at one time. I find it much easier to “get into” a tool than to switch tools.  Having said that, there are also those times that one puts down a tool and picks up another just to break the boredom.  Can someone say, deburrrrrrrrring?

Step 2.  Cleco the HS-906 to the HS-1003 and match drill the holes indicated.  Then machine countersink the indicated holes for 1/8" rivets.  Finally, final drill the 4 3/16" holes with a #12.

Step 3.   Final drill the 3/16" hole in the HS-912 hinge brackets.  Use a #12.  Then cleco each to the HS-1003 as shown, and final drill the #30 holes.

09/04/05  -  30 minutes

Step 4.   Mark the parts as you disassemble the unit.  Prime the parts and scuff the hinges.

09/05/05  -  2 hours

Step 5.   Rivet the HS-906 rear spar doubler, making sure you tape over the holes that are not to be riveted.  Nothing hard here.  I did make sure that the doubler was not as bowed as it was in the beginning.  Just ease out the bow by putting it on a table edge and giving it some gentle bending.

09/05/05  -  2 hours

Step 6.   Rivet the HS-912 brackets to the spar in the positions you had them in before, if you can find the marks after priming.  Place the manufactured head on the bracket!
